Program Description
The Wounds Within home study course will deepen your grasp of the key challenges for active duty and veteran military personnel and their families to beer prepare you as a mental health professional. The Wounds Within engages the reader in a detailed and compelling drama of a Marine who deployed early in the Iraq war, battled PTSD after returning home and ultimately took his own life. The story describes the family’s struggle and depicts their powerful advocacy aer their son’s death, which led to systemic reforms including improved services. The book is written from the perspective of Mark Nickerson, LICSW, who worked closely with the Marine and his family. The story expands beyond the central narrative and offers “big picture” information and perspective including many significant features of the post‐9/11 wars.
The Wounds Within portrays the transition from war zone to home zone and the array of difficult and clinically relevant issues for combat veterans and their families as they recover and reintegrate into post combat life (SEE BELOW). Practical information is made vivid with multiple examples. EMDR therapy and the AIP theory are presented in understandable terms with a transcript example of effective treatment and recovery from PTSD. The book urges civilian‐based clinicians to step up and be prepared to effectively serve our veterans in the coming years.

About the Authors:
Mark Nickerson, LICSW, is a psychotherapist, clinical consultant, and trainer with a specialty in trauma treatment. He has more than 40 years of clinical experience and is based in Amherst, MA, US. Nickerson is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of Michigan School of Social Work. He is a former president of the EMDR International Association, where he has served on the Board for eight years. He is a senior EMDR therapy trainer for the EMDR Institute. Nickerson conducts EMDR and other trainings nationally and internationally. Nickerson is author of The Wounds Within (2015: Skyhorse), an exposé on the challenges for war veterans and their families. He is also editor and a chapter author of Cultural Competence and Healing Culturally Based Trauma with EMDR: Innocative Strategies and Protocols (Springer, 2023 2nd edition, was published in 2023 (first edition, 2017)
Joshua S. Goldstein, PhD., is professor emeritus of international relations at American University. He graduated with a BA from Stanford University and earned his doctorate at MIT. Goldstein has published numerous books and articles in the general field of international relations and political science. These include Long Cycles: Prosperity and War in the Modern Age. Yale University Press. 1988, The Real Price of War: How You Pay for the War on Terror. New York University Press. 2005, and War and Gender: How Gender Shapes the War System and Vice Versa. Cambridge University Press. 2009.
