Paul Miller, MD is the author of EMDR Therapy for Schizophrenia and Other Psychoses (Springer, 2015)
Comments about Dr. Miller’s teaching:
“Dynamic presenter, rich material delivered with clarity, heart and wit.”
“[Dr. Miller offers] a different view and approach to schizophrenia and psychosis. It’s quite convincing and much more logical and humane than the traditional medical model.”
“I finally feel confident I have a pathway to work EMDR with my psychosis suffering patients.”
“Even if you never see a patient who is diagnosed with schizophrenia or psychoses [Miller’s teachings are] still very valuable. Miller sites the research and takes away the curtain from the mystery of attempting EMDR with these most challenging clients. He combines heart with science and the notion of the third way, which is a beautiful way to think about psychotherapy in general and EMDR specifically.”
“One image Miller uses is that of the wizard in The Wizard of Oz: instead of paying so much attention to the appearance the wizard is trying to create, he suggests we instead need something like the little dog Toto that sniffs out the ‘man behind the curtain’ which is where the real action is. The entity behind the curtain is problematic ‘memory networks’ which also manifest as ‘ego states’ that are related to trauma and difficult experiences.”
Program Description:
Paul Miller, MD, DMH, MRCPsych, is an EMDR practitioner and leading scholar, consultant and trainer on the topic of EMDR therapy for schizophrenia and psychosis. His review of case reports internationally has noted success in EMDR treatment of these DSM diagnosable illnesses. Dr. Miller’s own pioneering work has taken EMDR clinicians boldly into this frontier of EMDR therapy application and discovery. This workshop is an exploration of the treatment of the intersection of complex trauma, dissociation and psychotic disorders with EMDR therapy.
Dr. Miller’s study of and clinical experience with past trauma, when identified as an etiological factor to psychosis, and treated with EMDR therapy has shown functional improvement clinically. He has documented that EMDR therapy can safely and effectively treat people with psychotic experiences, without causing destabilization. Psychotic phenomena can be tracked back to access suitable targets for reprocessing. This AIP-informed understanding of psychosis explains pathology: guides therapeutic endeavor and is predictive of outcome. He notes that the more one explores the history and phenomenological development of DSM nosology for these conditions, the more one sees the great overlap with disorders of complex trauma and dissociation.
During the first half of this workshop, Dr. Miller will review key information providing a solid foundation of the ‘need to know’ aspects of psychological trauma, including its bio-psycho-social aspects, and a trauma informed understanding of psychosis related symptoms. Building from this base, he will describe his EMDR integrated clinical protocols and procedures including the ICoNN method for enabling the identification of targets for reprocessing. The second half of the workshop will include in-depth reviews of multiple case examples. It will also include a live “fish-bowl” clinical consultation format. During this section, colleagues of Dr. Miller will participate in clinical case discussions and will receive some case related questions presented by workshop participants. This format will simultaneously demonstrate a dynamic model for collaborative case formulation and provide an in depth look at the nuanced considerations in treatment planning.
Participants will be able to:
- Develop and articulate the nosological and phenomenological issues around psychological reactions to trauma; the dissociation / psychosis conundrum
- Evaluate the benefits of using a trauma-focused formulation and an AIP model for understanding complex trauma, including presentations such as schizophrenia specifically and psychoses in general
- Critically consider the available case material for EMDR therapy for psychoses and schizophrenia and analyze it alongside the current published international research for complex PTSD
- Critically consider the ICoNN model and its modifications of the standard EMDR therapy model
