“Paula Krentzel has done a superb job in developing a specialized EMDR protocol for treating individuals diagnosed with OCD, generalized anxiety, and phobias. She has carefully field tested this protocol and refined it over time, increasing its effectiveness and making it more and more user-friendly. She is a masterful teacher, offering incredibly compelling videotapes that demonstrate how to apply her protocol with challenging clients. Participants in her workshops leave with a clear understanding of how to successfully integrate her Distancing Protocol with EMDR’s Standard Protocol. I recommend adding this easy-to-learn protocol to your EMDR toolbox and trust that you will find it to be an invaluable addition to your clinical repertoire.” – Deborah L. Korn, Psy.D., Cambridge, MA

Program Description: The Distancing Technique was initially developed to assist in reprocessing targets that had an over-importance of thoughts, the need to control thoughts and the thought-action fusion. It can also be used to undo blocking beliefs as well as the misinterpretation of sensation as predictive of future catastrophe.
The goal of this technique is for the client to become a detached observer to their thoughts, sensations, images, and/or urges. It helps the client understand that the obsession is just a thought and not real, to gain distance from the thought, and put it aside.
The anxiety disorders that the Distancing Technique can be applied to include OCD, panic disorders, and phobias. The technique generates potential cognitive interweaves, which come from the client’s own words as expressed in the Preparation Phase. These interweaves can be used, when necessary, in the Desensitization Phase when reprocessing target memories such as the initial, worst, most recent and current triggers.
The training will depict clinically important aspects of OCD and other anxiety disorders including different manifestations of OCD within different cultures.
The workshop explains how to integrate the protocol in all phases of EMDR treatment and uses videos and a live demonstration to portray the technique. With the aid of handouts and material covered, participants will leave the training with immediately usable skills.
- To gain an understanding of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and how the disorder can be treated.
- Describe the Distancing Technique and be able to identify when to use it.
- To list the procedural steps of the Distancing within the Preparation Phase of the EMDR Standard Protocol
- Identify different types of coping statements (installed during the Preparation Phase) that can be used as interweaves during the Desensitization Phase (Phase 4) of the EMDR Standard Protocol.
- Lead the client in Future Rehearsal toward integrating the use of positive coping statements in a challenging situation.
