DAY 1 – The Distancing Technique: An Enhancement to the Treatment of OCD and Anxiety Disorders within EMDR Therapy – Day One Program Description:

The Distancing Technique was initially developed to enhance the effective EMDR reprocessing of issues and targets that had an over-importance of thoughts, the need to control thoughts and the thought-action fusion. It also proved effective when targeting the misinterpretation of sensation as predictive of future catastrophe.

The anxiety disorders that the Distancing Technique can be applied to include OCD, panic disorders, and phobias. The training includes a review of important diagnosis characteristics, case conceptualization for treatment of these disorders, and the role of the Distancing Technique.

The goal of this technique is for the client to become a detached observer to their thoughts, sensations, images, and/or urges. For example, to understand that the obsession is a thought and not real, to gain distance from the thought, and put it aside.

Interweaves, which come from the client’s own words expressed in the Preparation Phase, are used as needed throughout the EMDR protocol when reprocessing the initial, worst, most recent and current triggers. Methods for developing various types of client generated interweaves are reviewed in detail. Patient cases examples are presented to highlight how different interweaves consistent with the Distancing Technique are useful in all phases of EMDR.

An essential aspect of the Distancing Technique is to understand the different manifestations of OCD including how they may vary among cultural groups. In addition, the training describes uses of the Distancing Technique on the impact of the COVID pandemic.

The training goes through all phases of EMDR treatment and uses videos to demonstrate the technique as well as a practicum for participants to practice (at the site of the training and virtually) the Distancing Technique.

Learning Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the three components of The Distancing Technique and identify when to use it.
  • List the procedural steps of Distancing as used within the Preparation Phase of the EMDR Standard Protocol.
  • Identify types of adaptive coping statements (installed during the Preparation Phase) that can be used as interweaves during the Desensitization Phase (Phase 4) of the EMDR Standard Protocol.
  • Understand Future Rehearsal with a focus on integrating the use of adaptive coping statements in challenging situations.
Describe when to process past traumas and/or triggers for OCD or panic using the Standard EMDR protocol (either before or after the use of Distancing).
  • Describe how to assess when to use Future Rehearsal or the Standard EMDR protocol after completing Distancing.

DAY 2 (9:00am – 2:15pm) – The Distancing Technique: Applications for Ego States – Program Description:

The Distancing Technique was developed to enhance the treatment of OCD and anxiety disorders with EMDR. Clinicians can also incorporate Ego State Theory and use the Distancing Technique to address parts of the personality and inner conflicts which interfere with treatment.

This training reviews Ego State Theory and highlights how to identify and strengthen a client’s resources, as well as how to develop new resources. Participants will learn how to use the Distancing Technique to decrease internal conflict and the need for protective and survival strategies, such that the therapy can proceed more smoothly. The training uses video to demonstrate the resolution conflicting ego states in a client with Complex Developmental Trauma and Relational OCD. Another video demonstrates the use of Ego State Theory and Distancing with a client diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (DID) engaging in Future Rehearsal.

Note: Knowledge of Ego State Theory and the Distancing Technique initial training is a prerequisite for attending this presentation.

Learning Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  • Identify when a patient has parts that interfere with reprocessing which need to be addressed prior to treatment for OCD and/or other anxiety disorders
  • Identify needed adaptive resources to facilitate treatment
  • Describe how to develop increased internal communication among parts that may interfere with treatment
  • Describe how to decrease internal conflict using the Distancing Technique so that treatment may progress

Day 2 Training Schedule (all times Eastern):

  • 9:00am:
    • Review of Ego State Theory
    • Review of key components of the Distancing Technique
    • Case Examples of the integration of Ego State Theory and the Distancing Technique

DAY 2 (2:30pm – 4:30pm) – The Distancing Technique: Applications for Children and Adolescents – Program Description:

The Distancing Technique was developed to enhance the treatment of OCD and other anxiety disorders as part of the preparation phase of the Standard EMDR protocol. The implementation of the Distancing Technique is different with children and teens then with adult patients in meaningful ways.

This presentation reviews the key components of the Distancing Technique and addresses the modifications made for the treatment of children and teens. The presentation demonstrates how clinicians may use art, therapeutic play, and Sandtray during Distancing to create the Adaptive Coping Statement. In addition, the use of the Distancing strategies for the simple, challenging, and the “not yet” hierarchy of problems is demonstrated for the treatment of compulsive rituals. Additionally, participants learn ways to coach parents as an integral part of the treatment team for their child or teen.

Case examples and pictures of children’s sessions illuminate adaptations which can be made currently in treatment or after completed treatment for OCD.

Note: Knowledge of The Distancing Technique initial training is a prerequisite for attending this presentation.

Learning Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  • Identify key differences in the Distancing Technique with children, teens, and adults.
  • Describe ways to involve parents as integral in the treatment of children with OCD.
  • Identify the differences in using Future Rehearsal with children, teens, and adults.
Day 3 Training Schedule (all times Eastern):

  • 2:30pm:
    • Review Play therapy techniques
