Trainings provided by Ad de Jongh, PhD and Suzy Matthijssen, PhD
Over the past few years, EMDR Advanced Trainings and Distance Learning (EMDR ATDL) has hosted many well-regarded trainings presented by Ad de Jongh, PhD and Suzy Matthijssen, PhD on a wide range of topics. These innovative EMDR practitioners, researchers, and trainers draw from their clinical experience and research data including overseeing treatment centers serving thousands of clients and training staff in their methods. Their trainings are much appreciated not only for their clinically practical content but for their dynamic and engaging co-presentation methods. Fortunately, most of these trainings are still available in On-Demand format and available to you, typically with EMDRIA and other CE credits.
Whether you have attended some of their trainings or not, this guide with listings below are designed to help you clarify which trainings might be the best fit for you. EMDR ATDL curates its training library by retiring trainings that have become outdated or duplicative, and sometimes reruns trainings to provide updated information. Although all of these trainings may reference content that overlaps with other trainings, we believe that each of these currently available trainings provides content and case examples that are primarily unique.
EMDR 2.0 focused trainings
Ad de Jongh, PhD and Suzy Matthijssen, PhD are known for developing what they have named EMDR 2.0. The EMDR 2.0 approach emphasizes the value of working memory-taxing tasks when desensitizing emotionally laden memories. EMDR 2.0 methods prioritize the importance of desensitizing the most activated memories related to client symptoms whenever possible, and the memory-taxation techniques help clients tolerate the reprocessing of emotionally charged memories even in the most challenging patients. The EMDR 2.0 approach includes various other strategies which build client confidence and motivation while reducing the need for extended resourcing before reprocessing. Also surprise-effects and boosting arousal before and during processing are part of EMDR 2.0. Apart from the basics in EMDR 2.0 there are also a range of special techniques developed to deal with shame, anxiety to start therapy or anxiety to bring up the emotional memories.
If you are interested in understanding and learning to use EMDR 2.0 methods, please start by taking the EMDR 2.0 Basic Training combined with the EMDR 2.0 Special Techniques training that features specific skills consistent with EMDR 2.0 methods. These trainings are bundled together for a reduced fee. After completing these, you can take the EMDR 2.0 Masterclasses offered in 2023 and 2024 which can also be bundled for a discount.
Other EMDR training topics
There are also several trainings listed below that are designed for any EMDR trained clinician and can be used with or without EMDR 2.0 training and techniques. These include a clever and practical training on case conceptualization, learning the CAPS-5 assessment for PTSD, methods for treating various common mental health diagnoses, and more.
